CategoriesTagsSummaryod is a good God and for this we praise Him. Praise Him for His mercy and His grace. Praise Him for His love and for His forgiveness. I believe Jesus revealed the heart of God on the cross of Calvary when He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Truly they did not know that they were putting God in the flesh on the cross that day. They did not know that Jesus was carrying out His Father’s plan when He willingly died on the cross for our sins. God knew, the angels knew, but the crowd that tortured and crucified the Son of God did not know what they were doing! In this statement from Jesus we see three distinct characteristics of orgiveness. We see the Mission of Forgiveness. Jesus came into the world on a mission. His mission was to die for the sins of mankind. He came not to condemn the world but to save the world. The angel said at His birth, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” When Jesus said Father, forgive them He was expressing the Mission of Forgiveness. In this statement from the cross we also see the Marvel of Forgiveness. We must understand the circumstances of that day. The people at the cross had mocked Him, ridiculed Him, beaten Him, and plucked out His beard. He had been treated as bad as any common criminal of that day. Think about who Jesus was talking about when He uttered those words. They were the very ones responsible for His condition. They did not deserve to be forgiven. Guess what. Neither do we! Forgiveness is a marvelous thing. It was out of mercy He cried Father, forgive them. It was because of grace He spoke those words. We have all sinned. We all stand in need of forgiveness. He saw us at our worst and still chose to die in our place. This is the Marvel of Forgiveness. And finally here we see the Model of Forgiveness. Jesus is our model. He is our example. Jesus did not deserve what He got. Every charge they brought against Him was false. Yet Jesus chose to forgive them. This choice in no way meant that He approved of what they were doing. But He made the choice to forgive them and asked His Father to do likewise. In the same way we must choose to forgive others. We cannot afford to harbor unforgiveness or a root of bitterness. Matthew 6:15 says, “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” We must imitate the Master. He is our Model of Forgiveness. If our desire is truly to be more like Jesus then we will learn to walk in forgiveness. We have all been forgiven much. To whom much is given, much is required. Oh God give me a heart like Jesus. |
