091612 AUDIO“Until He Comes: Be Ready & Look Ahead!”- II Peter 3:8-13
Global Warming: very real threat.
But you “ain’t seen nothing’ yet!” It’s going to get a lot hotter than we can imagine.
2000 degrees for oil to ignite; 3422 degrees (C) to melt some rock.
According to Scripture (II Peter 3:10, 12) there is coming a day when the heavenly bodies (stars/planets, etc) will melt and the earth as we know it will be destroyed. We’re talking hot!
This will happen when Jesus comes again. The question then, is will you be ready for that day? Will it be a glad or sad day?
2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective.
Until Jesus comes, we must be ready for and look ahead to His coming.
Peter had pointed out that scoffers would come and scoff at the thought that Jesus is coming again.
Their argument? “Things haven’t changed from the beginning.”
They deliberately overlook that God had created the world by His word & that God destroyed the world by flood by His word.
By “the same word (God speaking it into being) the heavens & earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment & destruction of the ungodly” (vs7).
II Peter 3:8-13 - Peter continues his argument.
Vs8 - To God, who is not bound by time as we are, “1 day is as a 1000 yrs, & a 1000 yrs is as 1 day.”
Jesus is coming, at just the right time.
Vs9 - God is allowing time to repent, embrace Christ by faith.
Ezekiel 33:11
Vs10a - The “day of the Lord” is “God’s time” - when He will break thru & act decisively. It is the day of the Lord Jesus’ coming & judgment.
Vs10b - The “heavens” are “the vaulted expanse of the sky, w/all things visible in it…the region where the clouds & the tempests gather & where thunder & lightening are produced” (Strong’s). The heavenly bodies are the stars/planets.
Vs10c - ESV: “exposed;” NIV: “laid bare;” KJV: “burned up”
Vs12b - Hebrews 12:29 - “our God is a consuming fire.”
It is vital that we be prepared, but how?
Vs11 - 1)Living lives of holiness & godliness (which puts us in a hole) - Philippians 3:9, II Corinthians 5:21 - hallelujah!
Embrace Christ by faith, depending only/totally on Him & His redemptive work as the basis of right standing before Him.
We who believe must live lives of holiness & godliness, reflecting the light & imitating the likeness of Christ - I John 3:3.
2)Waiting for & hastening the day of the Lord - there is so much to do before Jesus comes! “Even so, come Lord Jesus!”
Vs13 - A word of great hope - new heavens & a new earth.
Revelation 21:1-8, 27
Will you be in that number of the redeemed? You can be, if you will come to faith in Christ, if you will commit your life to Him & receive Him into your life as Lord.
Until Jesus comes, we must be ready by faith in Him & look ahead to that glorious day, being used by Him to help others be ready, too.

090912_Remember His Promise_Part A“Until He Comes: Remember His Promise!”- II Peter 3:1-7
The danger of foolish predictions of the end of the world: they turn attention away from the truth that Jesus is coming again & judgment is very real.
2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective.
Until Jesus comes, we must remember His promise that He will return & expect Him to keep it.
II Peter 3:1-7
I)Predictions of the holy prophets.
“For every prophecy in the Bible about Christ’s 1st coming…there are 8 in relation to His 2nd coming.”
“There are some 1845 references in the OT about Christ’s 2nd coming, & 318 in the NT.”
“Every prophet in the OT (17 books of prophecy), except Jonah, promises or makes references to the end of the world age, marked by the 2nd coming of Christ.”
Isaiah 9:6-7
Daniel 2:44
II)Words of Christ Himself.
John 14:2-3
Matthew 24:24-27
Plays: 4003
090912_Remember His Promise_Part Bcontinued: Matthew 24:24-27 (Revelation 1:7)
Matthew 24:36, 42, 46
John 5:28-29
III)Teaching of the Apostles
I Peter 1:3-5
I Thessalonians 4:13-5:4
I Corinthians 15:20-28
There will be scoffers - vs4.
Their argument: from the beginning of time, nothing has changed (in regard to God’s intervention in history & the affairs of men).
This argument “deliberately overlooks” 1)God’s creation, 2)God’s judgment by the flood, 3)God’s intervention into the lost state of man (my addition to Peter’s argument).
Vs7 - In this same way God will speak & fire will destroy the earth and the ungodly.
People will scoff at the thought, but we must remember the promise that Jesus is coming again, that judgment is a coming reality, and be ready.
How can we be ready for Christ’s coming again?
1)Faith in Christ as Savior.
2)Commitment to Christ as Lord.
3)Hold fast to Jesus until He comes.
4)Be about His business until He comes.
The 1st coming of Christ is undeniable history; the 2nd coming of Christ, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, is just as sure!
Until Jesus comes, we must remember His promise, hold fast to His presence, & be about His business.

“Until He Comes: Remember to Remember!”- II Pet. 3:1-2a Remembering is a very important part of life: Wife’s birthday, anniversary, promises made, deeds to be done. Rallying cries: “Remember the Alamo!” “Remember the Maine!” “Remember Pearl Harbor!” “Remember 9-11!” Bible full of commands to remember - Deuteronomy 8:2, I Chronicles 16:12, Ecclesiastes 12:1, Ephesians 2:12-13 2012 Theme: “Until He Comes” - looking for Jesus to come and living according to that perspective. Until Jesus comes, we must remember to remember. I Peter 3:1-2a - “This is now the 2nd letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember…” John Calvin: “They stood in need of being often stirred up. The minds of the godly become dim, and as it were contract rust when admonitions cease…men even endued with learning become, in a manner, drowsy, except they are stirred up by constant warnings…” There are things we should forget: sins of others, failures, even victories - Philippians 3:13. But there are some things it is good to remember. Today, we celebrate through the 2 ordinances of the Church: Communion & Baptism. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial celebration - Luke 22:19 Remember: 1)That God sent His Son to be our Savior, 2)That Jesus died on the cross, in our place, for our sins, 3)That we who partake of the bread & cup have by faith embraced Christ as our Savior & Lord, 4)That we have committed our lives to Him, 5)That we are the redeemed, forgiven children of God, 6)Etc, etc! Partake w/gratitude & sober reflection on what has been done, who we are in Christ, & the commitment of our lives to Christ. Baptism is not a memorial, but a statement/declaration of faith. Publicly confess that we believe, have received & are committed to Jesus Christ as Savior/Lord of our lives. Witnessing another’s baptism should serve as a memorial to us, to remind us of the stand that we took however many years ago, & the commitment we made to Christ. Are you following thru? Are you walking w/Christ? Do you know Him better now than you did then? Are you serving Him? Do you love Him? Be committed today. Be true today. Until Jesus comes, we must remember to remember what God has done for us in Christ, who we are in Christ & the commitment we have made to Christ. Plays: 4595
