Destructive heresies - pointing away from the truth of who Christ is and what He has done. Vs2 - False teachers will gather a following! Sensuality - “unbridled lust, excess, licentiousness, outrageous- ness, shamelessness, insolence” (Strong’s). False teaching is like spiritual pornography leading to spiritual adultery! Truth is slandered, blasphemed by false teaching. Vs3 - Greed - desire to have more. False teachers want more following, attention, selfish gain. False teachers exploit through lies. False prophets/teachers do not and will not escape God’s wrath. He has condemned them even from long ago. Their destruction will be swift and sure (vs1). There always have been and always will be false prophets/teachers, until Jesus comes again. Some are obvious to most - “Free written prophecy,” Jim Jones, Harold Camping Others more subtle - Some TV evangelists, those who claim to be Christian but preach another gospel Others blatantly anti-Christ Colossians 2:8 So what are we to do? 1)Beware - Be careful what you take in. 2)Know the truth - John 8:31-32 - Be willing to learn 3)Test the spirits - I John 4:1-6 4)Be filled with the Spirit of Truth - Ephesians 5:18 5)Pray for God’s protection - yourself, your loved ones, each other. Until He comes, let us hold fast to the truth of Scripture, being aware of false prophets and teachers, being taught by the Spirit of truth.
