Summary
“Incarnation Prophesied” - Isaiah 9:1-7
Great Expectations - novel by Charles Dickens - nothing happened just as “Pip” expected. It’s much the same in our lives.
One great expectation that has been/will be fulfilled just as envisioned - Messiah - Savior sent from God to redeem fallen man/creation.
“Incarnation” - “the union of the 2nd person of the Godhead w/manhood in Christ” (Webster’s).
The incarnation of Christ was planned in eternity past & promised as early as in the Garden of Eden.
The incarnation of Christ was prophesied throughout the O.T.
Micah 5:2, Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:1-7
A.R. Faussett wrote, “The same region so darkened once would be the among the 1st to receive the Messiah’s light.” Mt. 4:13-14
God will break the yoke of the burden of Israel & lift the staff & rod of his oppressor (Assyria, Babylon, Satan, Sin). Understand the greater reaches of this prophesy, beyond Israel’s oppression & deliverance, to the greater oppression & deliverance of mankind, under the curse of sin & death.
So has come & is coming the day of victory in Jesus, when we will “study war no more.”
The reason for the hope prophesied: a child born, a son given.
Before he identifies this child/son, Isaiah says, “the government shall be upon His shoulder.” This is way bigger than you/I.
“Wonderful Counselor” - one fit to guide our lives.
“Mighty God” - David Gudzik, “God of all creation & glory, the Lord who reigns in heaven, the One worthy of all our worship & praise. This is a straight forward declaration of the deity of the Messiah.”
“Everlasting Father” - Father of eternity
“Prince of Peace” - “Shiloh, the ‘Tranquilizer.’”
His rule will continually increase, & w/the spread of His kingdom shall come unending peace, justice & righteousness.
The reference to the throne of David - II Sam.7 - “Your throne shall be established forever.”
Jesus, God incarnate, is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s great prophesy.
If from eternity past God planned the redemption of fallen man & to bring all things together in Christ, then don’t you want to be on the right side of that plan?
If Jesus, God incarnate, is He to whom tribute belongs, is King of kings & Lord of Lords, then shouldn’t you & I focus our whole lives, existence upon Him?
If the eternal, almighty, holy God would take on human flesh to carry out His eternal plan & bring whoever will believe into relationship w/Him for eternity future, then shouldn’t that relationship with Him be what our lives are about?
God has graciously included us who believe in His vast eternal plan, we who are specks of paint on the great canvas of eternity, granules of sand in the limitless sands of time, mere drops of water in the infinite ocean of His purpose. Let us look to Him, order our lives after Him, give our lives totally to Him, consider His claim on us.
To God be the glory, great things He has done!
